The Costa Tropical, and Los Guájares in particular, offers a wealth of opportunity to partake of a variety of activities depending on your personal preferences. For lovers of the outdoors, there are a number of beautiful walks, ranging from gentle strolls to vigorous hikes, surrounding the three villages of Guár Fondón, Guájar Faragüit and Guájar Alto. All offer the opportunity to not only enjoy the flora and fauna of this richly sub tropical micro climate, but also to delight in the spectacular views across the mountains. Horse riding is another option for those who wish to venture further into the surrounding countryside. There are companies that offer guided horse treks through the mountains, as well as a number of stables along the coast offering beach rides and lessons. Cyclists will be pleased to know that the area around Los Guájares offers some challenging cycle routes; these are not for the faint-hearted as the village of Guájar Alto sits proudly at 457 metres above sea level. Regardless of whether your choice is to ride or walk, what better way is there to relax afterwards than taking a drink and tapa or two in one of the typically Spanish bars that are situated in each of the three villages. Visiting Los Guájares either during cultural week, mid April, or fiesta time in August guarantees a first hand experience of the Spanish love of partying. Everyone is welcome to dance a rousing paso doble, partake of locally produced food and wine, join in with religious processions and enjoy exciting firework displays. Golf enthusiasts are well catered for at nearby Motril's Morisco golf course, or indeed the Santa Clara Golf Club further inland towards Granada. Motril also has a thriving shopping centre, where many a bargain can be found. The city of Granada, at only an hour's drive away, is an absolute must for all visitors to the Costa Tropical, whether it is a day at the Science Park, exploring strange phenomenons and learning more about the world in which we live, or meandering through the maze of winding streets, taking in the architecture and history of Granada city itself. And of course a visit to Granada city would not be complete without taking the time to completely immerse oneself in the breathtaking Moorish palace of the Alhambra and the gardens of Generalife. From November to April, Europe's most southern ski resort of Sol y Nieve becomes a hive of activity, as visitors experience the thrill of skiing and snowboarding under the bright blue Andalucían skies. Non skiers can also enjoy the resort by taking a cable car ride up and settling in one of the bars to watch skiers of all abilities take to the slopes. Driving the short distance to the Tropical Coast of the Mediterranean offers sun seekers a choice of beaches, from the bustling tourist resorts with waterparks, scuba diving schools and windsurfing to the more remote strips of coastline, a couple of which are designated at naturist beaches. And when you have had enough of the beach, why not head into the historic towns of Almuńécar or Salobreńa, to visit the castles still sitting majestically above the old quarters of the towns? Whatever your preference, however relaxed or busy you like to be, Los Guájares, a gem in the midst of The Costa Tropical, has something for everyone. |
